Air transportation allows to save precious time in a so vast country even if it is the most expensive means of transportation. During decades, the air companies AEROMEXICO and MEXICANA were the only ones on the market but since the deregulation in 1988, quite a number of air companies set up shop there, and especially low cost companies. The prices change at any time so you should consult their websites.

See the chapter transportation in Mexico for the contacts of each low cost company.

taxi to avoid if it hasn’t a meter Buy a ticket at the windows in the room E (international arrivals) or room A (domestic arrivals). These taxis are serious and their prices are fixed for up to 4 persons and standard size luggage.
Example : Airport – Historic center of Mexico City : about $152, the ride (july 2009).

Left picture : taxi to avoid if it hasn’t a meter

Once you have your ticket from the window of the taxis autorizados/ transporte terrestre (orange sign), you go to door 10 at the very end of the corridor. If you don’t pay attention, a porter will carry your suit case 10 or 20 m farther, to the taxi, and ask for a tip. In the cab, ask for the number to call when you want to go back and you’ll get a discount for your ride back. (130 pesos instead of 152 pesos from Historic center).
Downtown, preferably take the taxis waiting at the taxi stations (taxis de sitios), recognizable by the letter S in their license number and the orange strip that underlines their plate. You could also call a radio-taxi.

Never take a taxi with no color picture license displayed on the windshield or a taxi without a meter (useful in the whole country).
The libre taxis are recognizable by the "L" on the licence plate. You can stop them by waving. They are cheap but are not as safe as the taxis de sitio.
By night, do take the taxis de sitios. Most of the hotels can give you the fares. On Friday night and holidays eves, the taxis are very busy. So call them ahead especially if you have to go to the airport or take the metro if you don’t have cumbersome luggage.
